Alligator Cracks

Alligatored asphalt is characterized by interconnected cracks forming small pieces that range in size from about 1” to 6” and appear much like alligator skin. This damage is caused by failure of the surfacing due to traffic loading and often due to inadequate base or deficient subgrade support. If the subsurface is not secure, improve the drainage and repair by excavating localized areas and replacing base and surface. If the base is secure, repair with FloMix. Simply sweep or blow the area clean, mix your FloMix, trowel it on, top with provided sand and sweep it once it has set up. With FloMix, the problem is handled in about an hour.

Asphalt Damage, Part 6, Block Cracks

Block cracking is identified by interconnected cracks joining to form large blocks. The cracks usually intersect at nearly right angles. Blocks range from one foot to nearly ten feet or more across. The closer-spaced blocks indicate more advanced aging caused by shrinking and hardening of the asphalt over time. Repair with sealcoating during early stages to reduce weathering of the asphalt. If the cracks are more than cosmetic, top with FloMix to fill the cracks, seal and prevent further cracking.

Because these Paser descriptions were so short, I’m including two asphalt damage suggestions in today’s blog.

Reflection cracks

Cracks in overlays reflect the crack pattern in the pavement underneath. They are difficult to prevent but not hard to correct. A quick overlays with FloMix will solve the problem with no digout or removal.

Slippage cracks

Crescent or rounded cracks in the direction of traffic, caused by slippage between an overlay and an underlying pavement. Slippage is most likely to occur at intersections where traffic is stopping and starting. Repair by laying a thin layer of FloMix over the cracks and extend slightly beyond the damaged area, feathering it in to the surrounding asphalt. This will help prevent further cracks and bond the overlay and underlying pavement.

I like the idea of pinterest, and opened an account there so we could post some instructions on using our products. Lets face it, the site is clearly geared toward women. There are a lot of recipes and arts and crafts, puppies, dresses and shoes. My kids, (boys and a girl) like crafts, but I can’t imagine my boys choosing to browse pinterest.com for long. I was quite excited to find out that there are three new sites with a very similar setup, all geared toward men. I’ve set up accounts with manteresting.com: http://manteresting.com/workbench/9510/which is supposed to be in beta, but seems to be working quite well. Transverse Cracks in Asphalt

A crack forming at an approximate right angle to the center line is a transverse crack. They are often regularly spaced. They are caused by movement due to temperature changes and aging, hardening asphalt. Transverse cracks will initially be widely spaced (over 50’). Additional cracking will occur as they age until they are closely spaced (within several feet). If not properly sealed and maintained, secondary or multiple cracks develop parallel to the initial crack. The crack edges can further deteriorate by raveling and eroding the adjacent pavement. Prevent water intrusion and damage by sealing cracks which are more than 1⁄4” wide with FloMix or PolyFlexDS Black in cartridges. For a smooth finish, top entire damage with FloMix.

Asphalt Damage, Part 4, Distortion

Shoving or rippling is caused by surfacing material displacing crossways to the direction of traffic. It can develop into washboarding when the asphalt mixture is unstable because of poor-quality aggregate or improper mix design. Very large repairs can be handled by milling smooth and overlaying with stable asphalt mix. This may not last for a long time however. Other pavement distortions may be caused by settling, frost heaves, etc. Patching with FloMix will provide a long-lasting, smooth repair. The subgrade must have some stability for any repair to last.

Asphalt Rutting

Rutting is displacement of material, creating channels in wheelpaths. It is caused by traffic compaction or displacement of unstable material. Severe rutting (over 2”) may be caused by base or subgrade consolidation. Repair minor rutting with a thin layer of FloMix. Severe rutting may require some preplacement of BlakRok before completing the repair with FloMix.

Polishing

Polishing is a smooth slippery surface caused by traffic wearing off sharp edges of aggregates. Repair with sealcoat or thin bituminous overlay using skid-resistant aggregate.

Asphalt Damage, Part 2, Flushing

Flushing is excess asphalt on the surface caused by a poor initial asphalt mix design or by paving or sealcoating over a flushed surface. It appears as a shiny, black surface caused by liquid asphalt migrating to the pavement surface. The result is a smooth surface on the pavement.Repair by blotting with sand, using lime water or by overlaying with an asphalt aggregate mix designed for flushing.
